Countertop microwaves aren't equipped with filters, however above-the-range microwaves that have exhaust fans have exhaust fans. It's the one that you can turn on when making food on your stove, to assist in the removal of smoke and grease. Microwave filters should clean every 3 to 6 months based on the frequency at which they're used.

Filters that are dirty pose dangerous to burn and can stop the microwave from functioning effectively. The great thing is that it's incredibly simple to clean your microwave's filter - no tools needed!

  1. Get rid of your filter. The filter is under the microwave above the range and should easily pop out. Remove it gently and put it in a large bowl of hot, soapy water. If the filter appears to be extra oily, make a 1/4-cup addition of baking soda into the water.

  2. Allow it to soak. Allow the filter to soak for around 15 minutes, which will help reduce the grease.

  3. Clean and remove. Take the filter out of the hot water and scrub it down the sink with the help of a scrubber or sponge. The oil should be able to come off.

  4. Clean, dry and then replace. Rinse the filter thoroughly and allow it to dry completely prior to replacing.
